The Secret to a Great Performance is Fun

As a singer, the end result is performance. You need to sing in tune, with proper posture, breath right, and have a beautiful tone. Had enough yet? I’m still going. You need to enunciate, place your voice correctly, shift registers appropriately, and sing within your range. That’s not all. The list could go on and on. But, there’s something more important than them all – have fun!

Here’s how:

Forget About Technique: Did I just write that? Yes, I did. When you perform, you should focus on expressing meaning and the words of your text. By doing so, your performance becomes exciting and engaging. Thinking about technique will make your performance stodgy and unemotional. There may be moments, as a beginner, where you may need to split your mind’s attention and focus on how to successfully negotiate a hard vocal run, but don’t make it a habit. If you have practiced your song enough, then the technical aspects should already be ingrained into your body. Drawing your attention away from methodology allows you to let loose and have fun.

Stop Thinking About Me: Don’t worry what people are thinking about you. Instead, focus on what gifts you want to give the audience. Even if you sing a song of anger, then you are giving the audience an opportunity to feel that anger with you. By placing your attention on the audience, and how you can give them a good time, nerves will never be an issue. Let’s face it; if you are self-conscious, then you are clearly not having fun.

Just Friends: Think of the audience as friends. They may not all be actual friends you go out on the weekends with, but every single person you sing to is rooting for you. They want to have a good time, so they want you to do well. They are supporting you with their attendance. They may even have paid money to see you. The fact that they want you to succeed makes them your best friends. Think of performing as your time to be the center of attention at a party held in your honor.

Keep it Fresh: It may be you have performed or practiced your music so many times you are bored with it. In that case, it’s time to move on or find a new approach to your music. Connect with the words again. Research them; ask others how the lyrics apply to their lives. Rock stars create new choreography to liven up old songs and when appropriate you can to. Just make sure when you perform your songs, you are in love with them.

Smile: When appropriate, smile with your cheeks and eyes. Not only does it invite people to enjoy your performance, lifted cheeks improve your overall vocal tone by creating an elevated space in your mouth. Eyes smile too. Some refer to it as putting sparkle into the eyes. Overall you should simply emit an aura of love and acceptance towards your audience members. No one wants to feel like an outsider, so welcome them into your life.

Gratitude: Be grateful your audience is enjoying these moments with you. Life is busy and those that are with you have given you some of their precious time. You don’t know whether all the members of your audience came willingly or were dragged out by their spouse or friend. Keep them in mind when you take your bows and if you get a chance thank audience members for coming. People are much more likely to return for repeat performances when they feel appreciated.

Love Singing: Most important of all, never lose your love of singing. It’s easy to get frustrated by all the critiques you get when you try to improve your voice. Even when you aren’t trying to improve, people will judge you. You can’t please everyone. Forget about that and remember why you started. You love singing. Take time to do the things that made you like it in the first place, like karaoke or singing in the shower.
